HEYERDAHL, THOR
Aku-Aku : Paskeoyas Hemmelighet
Oslo, Gyldendal. 1957, 1st Norwegian Edition. Hardcover. Book, The book describes the 19551956 Norwegian Archaeological Expedition's investigations of Polynesian history and culture at Easter Island, the Austral Islands of Rapa Iti and Raivavae, and the Marquesas Islands of Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. Visits to Pitcairn Island, Mangareva and Tahiti are described as well. By far the greatest part of the book tells of the work on Easter Island, where the expedition investigated the giant stone statues (moai), the quarries at Rano Raraku and Puna Pau, the ceremonial village of Orongo on Rano Kau, as well as many other sites throughout the island. Much of the book's interest derives from the interaction of the expedition staff, from their base at Anakena beach, with the Easter Islanders themselves, who lived mainly in the village of Hanga Roa. 361p. illus fold-out maps. LOVELL, MARY S.
A Rage to Live: A Biography of Richard and Isabel Burton
New York, W W Norton & Co Inc. 1998. (ISBN: 0393046729) Hardcover. Book, "From the moment they met, their marriage seemed both inevitable and impossible. Isabel was a schoolgirl, scion of the Arundells, England's most distinguished Catholic family, and when they passed each other while walking at a seaside resort, Richard Burton had already made his mark as a linguist, scholar, traveler, and rebel against Victorian conformity. A hundred yards on, Isabel looked back and found him staring after her: she decided then that she would marry him. It was several years before they met again. By then Burton was one of the most accomplished linguists in the Indian Army. An intelligence agent with a genius for disguise, he had risked death to penetrate Mecca during the hadj, posing as a native pilgrim. He would soon become even more famous as one of the earliest explorers of East Africa. After their marriage, the Burtons traveled the world from diplomatic postings in Brazil and Africa to hair-raising adventures in the Syrian desert. In later life Richard courted further controversy as translator of such erotic classics as the unexpurgated edition of The Arabian Nights, The Perfumed Garden, and The Kama Sutra. Based on previously unavailable archives, Mary Lovell has written a compelling joint biography that sets Isabel in her proper place as Burton's equal in daring and endurance, a fascinating figure in her own right." 910p. bibliography.index. MURPHY, DERVLA
Cameroon with Egbert
London, Arrow. 1990, Reprint. (ISBN: 0099728001) Soft cover. Book, Their most recent sojourn took them to Africa for the first time, where Murphy, eighteen-year-old Rachel and a Fulani stallion called Egbert spent three unpredictable months following ludicrously inaccurate maps leading them from village to village in Cameroon. Although they spoke none of Cameroon's 300 or so languages, the Murphys enjoyed the hospitality of the local people and numerous village chiefs--some with as many as 250 wives--as they made their way through the highlands, where Europeans were first seen fewer than ninety years ago. They camped in the uncannily depopulated Gangdaba Mountains, which soon broke their nerve; during their stay in the breathtaking Mbabo Mountains, they had the chance to observe the indigenous wildlife--warthogs, antelope, baboons, and colobus monkeys. Very Good.
